Richards, Grant - Hellboy Illustration!

Grant Richards is the UK based, high level illustrator perhaps best known for the Graphic Novel AWAY, published by Markosia Enterprises, and as the creator of Damage Case and Gym Rat. 

This 2021 illustration of Mike Mignola's most famous creation is a masterclass in texture and fine-line rendering. Richards brings a rugged, heavy-set power to Hellboy by showing him from the back, which really highlights the incredible detail in his muscular anatomy and stone Right Hand of Doom. The cross-hatching across his back and tail give the skin a weathered, organic feel that makes the character look truly battle-worn.

The way the smoke and flames curl around him creates a cool, atmospheric depth that makes him feel grounded in the middle of a supernatural scene. Using the glint on his oversized revolver as a focal point adds a nice touch of drama without needing a full-blown action sequence. It is a fantastic example of the high-level technique Richards is known for, giving the legendary Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense agent a sophisticated and imposing presence!
