This 1982 interior page from Detective Comics #520 is a quintessential example of the dark, moody, and deeply atmospheric aesthetic that defined Batman during the early to mid-1980s. While Don Newton’s pencils provide the solid storytelling and classic superhero anatomy, the page is elevated by the distinctive embellishment of the late Alfredo Alcala. Regardless of the penciller he worked with, Alcala was primarily responsible for the outstanding, shadow-heavy, and textured look that characterized the two Batman titles during this era, and his intricate, fine-line brushwork is on full display here.
The page features a classic, Silver Age styled 3-panel page, with Jason Bard and Commissioner Gordon in the opening panel, while the bottom two thirds of the page is made up of two, large, vertical panels. The second panel shows an incredibly beautiful, full figure of Batman as he walks towards us and away from Vicki Vale. The third and final panel features Gordon, Bard, and Vale as the Batmobile drives away. Alcala's use of old-school, illustrative rendering & lighting techniques creates a noir environment, capturing the grit of Gotham City!
