Robinson, Roger - Spider-Man & Venom Illustrations!

These two 2012 illustrations by Roger Robinson perfectly capture the classic "cat and mouse" dynamic between Spider-Man and Venom. These are two separate illustrations, each one on a sheet of 11" x 14" Bristol board. By placing them side by side, both images coalesce to create a sense of high-speed pursuit that makes it feel like they are about to collide, due to the mirrored, lunging poses!

Spider-Man’s lean, flexible frame is shown in full athletic swing, emphasizing his agility and the physics of his web-slinging. In total contrast, the Venom piece focuses on sheer, hulking power, with his massive muscles and elongated claws making him look like an unstoppable force of nature. The heavy use of deep blacks on Venom gives him a weighted, oily appearance that makes the white spider emblem and his wild, lashing tongue really pop. Robinson’s linework and strong contrast on both pieces highlight the different ways these two move, from Spidey’s grace to Venom’s raw aggression. It is a great pair of drawings that showcase why this is one of the all-time, most exciting rivalries in comics!
