This 1978 original interior page is a rare and remarkable find from one of DC’s most celebrated treasures, All-New Collectors' Edition #C-54. The issue's penciller, José Luis García-López, is widely considered the definitive DC artist of the era and one of the (and perhaps THE) greatest comic book draftsmen of all-time, and his work on this tabloid-sized epic is a masterclass in dynamic, large-scale superhero draftsmanship. Beyond the prestige of the artist, this specific page carries an incredible rarity factor for collectors of this Superman vs. Wonder Woman story.
Despite the book’s title, actual combat between the two icons is surprisingly scarce throughout the 72-page narrative. Only 18 (25%) of the potentially available original art pieces in the entire story even feature both characters together! More significantly, while the book is built around their legendary conflict, there are ONLY FIVE PIECES from the entire treasury edition that show Superman and Wonder Woman actively engaged in physical combat! This page is one of those five, making it a critical "action" piece from a story where such moments are incredibly rare.
The content of the page is equally fascinating for its "of its time" characterization. It features a high-intensity sequence where Superman is reeling from a strike by Wonder Woman, expressing genuine shock that she actually hit him. His internal monologue reflects the social attitudes of the late 70s, as he indignantly declares that "Even if she IS a woman--no one treats me that way!" The page culminates in a powerful, full-figure shot of Superman retaliating with a massive "POWW!" as he charges back into the fray. This is a quintessential piece of Bronze Age history, capturing the raw power of two deities in a clash that remains one of the most famous crossovers in comic book history!
